French trade violin labelled ‘Lutherie Artistique- A. Torelli’
A typically neat, clean violin of the Mirecourt school, probably from the Laberte workshops from around 1900 to 1920. These large workshops produced a range of instruments to suit all player’s needs, the best being of impressively high quality.
Having a Nicolo Amati inspired arching shape, the violin has a two piece back with the figure descending from the centre; the sides and head are of similar wood; the top of medium spaced reed lines; the varnish of a light golden brown, shaded darker in places and applied in a complex faux antique pattern.
Now, 100+ years old, it is in perfect condition and has a nice clean, bright sound which carries well. It would be an ideal violin for the intermediate student looking to advance their studies.
